Mila Evanovich, a Serbian-American author from the West Coast of the USA, wrote her first novel – No Bread Tomorrow – a historical fiction that sheds light on suppressed and forgotten stories from the time of the collapse of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the life of a woman from the Nikolić family. This powerful novel, the first part of a planned trilogy, was promoted at the end of May at two literary events in Pennsylvania, with the support of the Circle of Serbian Sisters. “I wrote this book because I realized how few historical novels about Serbs exist in English. And if we don’t tell it – who will?” – says Mila, adding that the goal of her creativity is to build bridges of understanding between generations and cultures.
Highlighting strong and passionate women, the author Mila Evanovic brings to light a long-suppressed part of history – the exceptional courage of women resistance fighters who were imprisoned in cell Block 38 of the Banjica concentration camp. Through vivid storytelling and in-depth research, she honors the voices of these forgotten heroines – women who stood up to the Nazi occupation with courage, conviction and indomitable will.
